New CPD offering for schools

In conjunction with Cocentra, Brendan Routledge and Caroline Cuerden are launching a new package of support and training for schools in Suffolk and Norfolk. They will be offering a wide range of CPD opportunities which will include sessions on working with new technologies, e-safety, involving your whole community in learning, coaching and mentoring, emerging leadership and succession planning and much more.

To launch this new venture there will be three opportunities for schools to come along and find out more about what we do. Initially these are intended for Suffolk schools, although Norfolk schools are of course welcome to attend. they are as follows:

5th March 4.15pm – Stoke Ash Primary School, Stoke Ash IP23 7EL

6th march 4.15pm – Gorseland Primary School, Deben Ave, Martlesham heath IP5 3QR

12th March 4.15pm – St Louis Middle School, St Andrews St South, Bury St Edmunds IP33 3PH

Further events for Norfolk schools will follow in due course.

Brendan is now a CEOP Ambassador

Attended an excellent course at the TDA in Manchester last week run by the education team from CEOP (Child Exploitation Online Protection centre). A big thank-you to Helen and Michelle for a really first-rate course, well-presented and full of very useful high-quality resources. This means that I am now qualified to run CEOP courses and provide e-safety training for schools and colleges and provide training, advice and guidance to parents, teachers and young people. Schools interested in having a ‘ThinkuKnow’ course delivered in their school should contact me. The course is free for schools although they are expected to cover reasonable expenses such as travel and printing costs etc

A few days in Dubai

In the warmth of Dubai this week delivering the Digital Creator course at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed University. Met some great people from a range of education institutions in the Middle East, including the university itself, King Saud University in Riyadh, Saana University in Yemen and a number of schools in the United Arab Emirates. Some fascinating discussions about developing new e-learning opportunities out there.

A few days in Ireland

Just back from a few days in Northern Ireland working with the team at the Tyrone and Donegal Partnership in Omagh. Great bunch of people, amazingly committed to the work they do trying to enagage young people who have not had great success in their school-based education. Superb hospitality too. On the way back to the airport took a diversion to see the fabulous Giant’s Causeway on the Antrim Coast. Quite spectacular and at the this time of the year almost devoid of other tourists. If you are up that way go and see it, you won’t be disappointed. Some pictures from my trip here.

Been a brilliant day at the fabulous St Louis Middle school in Bury St Edmunds where 12 of my PGCE primary teacher trainees have been having a great time exploring how to make music teaching engaging, exciting, inspiring, fun.
After a planning day last week with myself and head of music, Caroline Dearing, it was into the classroom today to try out some ideas with year six pupils. The children were asked to work with the trainee teachers to create a simple call and response song using voices, body percussion and a huge range of percussion instruments. The results were wonderful. Next step is to take the recordings they made and work with them next week to use software to add further tracks and publish the results to NUMU. Cant wait to hear the final productions.

Suffolk Postgraduate Innovation Centre are offering 3 courses in conjunction with The Art Education Association. The tutors, Tim Wilson and Brendan Routledge, are well known to people working in Suffolk for their ability to run practical courses that are pertinent to all as both personal and professional development. The courses are open to all and are designed for individual or business use in addition to those involved in education.

Looking for a good Halloween story for your classroom or for your own children? Then look no further than the fantastic albums of stories from E2BN which are now available on iTunes and Amazon MP3. The first album, titles ‘Witches, Ghosts and Vampires‘ is particularly suitable for this time of the year and will send a shiver down the spine of any who dare listen. Album two, ‘Extraordinary Creatures‘ features fabulous stories about Dragons, Devil Dogs and other strange animals. The third and fourth albums will be available in the next week or two. Volume three is ‘Forgotten tales‘ and features some lesser-known but very useful stories including ‘The Snow Maiden’ and ‘The Mummy’s Tale’. The fourth album will be entitled ‘Well-loved Tales‘ and features some very familiar stories including some Greek myths such as ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’ and ‘Daedalus and Icarus’, as well as some other classic stories like ‘Beowulf’. These are really not to be missed.

Making the News at BETT

In January 2010 Simon Finch from Northern Grid and I ran the NEN Reporter event at Olympia. Over the course of four days we worked with groups of pupils from schools all over the country who were the prizewinners in the National Education Network‘s journalism competition. At the show the pupils were given the task of reporting what they found using E2BN’s Making the News 2 website. The link below is to an interview we did with Russell Prue who was running an internet radio show from the NEN stand.

New training courses now available

In conjunction with E2BN, Brendan and Caroline are offering a range of training opportunities for schools, colleges, universities and community groups. The courses will be delivered at a range of training centres around the eastern region including venues in Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Lowestoft and Hinxworth. There is a mixture of half day, whole day and twilight sessions covering many different areas of interest. You can download the brochure outlining these courses here.
